22 Years old Alicia Houston, a HIV-positive
transgender woman in Kampala, campaigns in Support of Rainbow Riots in Uganda. She said, “It will also be a creative space that
will cater for many who don’t have other chances to express themselves
elsewhere,”.
As the Rainbow group of Uganda moves to open a Center
for Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender people, the minister for Ethics and
integrity, Simon Lokodo warned against this. .
“They will have to take it somewhere else. They can’t open a center of LGBT
activity here. Homosexuality is not allowed and completely unacceptable in
Uganda,” he said. “We don’t and can’t allow it. LGBT activities are already
banned and criminalized in this country. So popularizing it is only committing
a crime.”According to the activist group, the LGBT Center would be a support system to “Queer People”
1.
Queer people in Uganda live in fear for being arrested
or beaten up. The LGBT Center would provide them a safe place to encourage, support
them.
2.
The centre would provide these queer people
opportunities to relax and socialize.
3.
They would also give advice to these people on health and
safety
